Heartland Through To Finals

Nigeria’s Heartland will feature in this year’s CAF Champions League final after they sent packing fellow Nigerians Kano Pillars in the semi-final 1-0 on the day and 5-0 on aggregate.
Two-goal hero in the first leg semi-final a week ago at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Uche Agba, grabbed the winner a minute from time with a stunning shot from over 25 yards, which bounced in front of a diving goalkeeper Theophilus Joel before resting at the back of the net.
The all-Nigerian clash was halted for about 10 minutes mid-way through the second half when disappointed Kano fans threw missiles into the pitch and then attacked their Heartland rivals.
Heartland will now battle the overall winner of the other semi-final between TP Mazembe of DR Congo and Sudan’s Al Hilal next weekend. Mazembe triumphed 5-2 in the first encounter in Omdurman.
Kano Pillars, who suspended Slovenian coach, Ivo Sajh, on the eve of this match, created several chances in front of a capacity crowd at the Sani Abacha Stadium, but Victor Namo, Victor Ogaga and Bello Kofarmata were far from clinical in front of goal.
Pillars were without striker Gambo Mohammed who fell ill on the eve of this match, while skipper Bala Mohammed, who missed the match in Owerri due to suspension, returned to action.
Heartland also carved their own chances particularly in the second half with Zambian striker Signs Chibambo, Emeka Nwanna and goal scorer Agba all coming close.
The defence of the visiting Owerri club also stood firm as Pillars piled pressure in search of a goal with goalkeeper Austin Brown impressive as he dived and blocked whatever the home team threw at him.
Enyimba are the only Nigerian club to win the CAF Champions League, having won the lucrative club competition in 2003 and 2004.

Heartland Confident Of Being Crowned African Champions

Nigeria’s Heartland Football Club have expressed confidence they will soon be crowned African champions after they dumped fellow countrymen Kano Pillars 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-final of this year’s CAF Champions League.
The Owerri club now await the winner of the other semi-final between TP Mazembe of DR Congo and Sudan’s Al Hilal, with Mazembe most likely to go through after winning the first encounter 5-2 in Omdurman.
A Heartland-Mazembe final will be a rematch as both teams first clashed in Group B of the competition. The Congolese won the first game 2-0 and their Nigerian rivals avenged this loss with a similar win in Owerri.
“It will be right to say that Mazembe have so far been the best team we have clashed with in this competition, besides Royal Armed Forces of Morocco,” admitted Heartland team manager, Emeka Iwuagwu.
“We lost in Lubumbashi because most of our players were short on fitness or injured, while four of them were away on trials overseas. But everybody could see that we were far and away the better team in Owerri and could have won by more than the two goals we scored.”
“Our target has been to make it to the final of the competition and it is definitely a dream come true for us that we’re in the final,” added Heartland assistant coach, Ben Iroha.
“But we can’t relax yet because we still have a final to play and it won’t be an easy one against Mazembe.”
The Nigerian club will host the first leg final on November 1 with the return leg a fortnight later.
“We just have to win well at home to ensure we become African champions,” disclosed Iwuagwu.
Heartland will welcome back on-form forward John Owoeri, who was suspended for the return leg semi-finals against Kano Pillars. Owoeri scored a goal and created another as his club beat Mazembe at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
Uche Agba, 23, has also come into his element at a great stage of the competition as he notched three goals against Pillars to bring to five his total number of goals in the Champions League.
While midfielder Ikechukwu Ibenegbu has continued to earn rave reviews for his vision and industry in the middle of the park. Many believe it will not be long before ‘Mosquito’ is considered for the Super Eagles.
This will be Heartland’s second Champions Cup final as they, then known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale, reached this stage of the competition in 1988 only to fall 4-1 on aggregate to Algeria’s Entente Setif.

Mazembe Hot Favourites For Final

TP Mazembe are hot favourites to join Nigerian side Heartland in the final of the 2009 African Champions League as they prepare for their semifinal, second leg, in Lubumbashi on Sunday.
The DR Congo side were magnificent as they thrashed Al Hilal 5-2 in Sudan in the first leg a fortnight ago, and it would take something bordering on a miracle for them not to complete the job in the second meeting.
This is especially so given the superb home form of the team in this year's competition, when they scored eight goals without reply in the group stages.
They have comfortably been the highest scorers in the 2009 campaign, and also boast the best defence, giving them the all-round properties of a champion team.
The strength of the DR Congo side is that they can find goals from anywhere, with leading scorer Alain Dioko Kaliyutuka chief amongst the dangermen.
Mazembe, who last won Africa’s top club prize more than 40 years ago, having reached four successive finals between 1967 and 1970 but have never been back to the deciding tie since, also showed their tremendous mental strength to twice fight back from behind in Omdurman.
For Al Hilal, it looks as though it will be another semifinal exit, the same fate that befell them in 2007 when they went out at the Last 4 stage to eventual champions Etoile du Sahel. Few would bet against that pattern continuing.
The match will be refereed by experienced South African official Daniel Bennett.
