Mazembe are African champions for the third time
TP Mazembe claimed their third African title with a lone goal victory over Heartland FC of Nigeria in the final second leg clash of the Orange CAF Champions League on Saturday in Lubumbashi.

An own goal by Heartland defender Emmanuel Omodiagbe on 73 minutes was enough to earn Mazembe the diadem on the away goal rule after both legs ended 2-2 on aggregate.

It was third title for Les Corbeaux after successes in 1967 and 1968, and a ticket to represent Africa at the FIFA Club World Championship slated for the United Arab Emirates later in December.

The feat, also the first ever for Les Corbeaux since the introduction of the new format in 1997, did not come that easy as they had to surpass a resilient Heartland side for the ultimate.

Playing in front of a packed crowd at the renovated Kenya Stadium in Lubumbashi, with DR Congo President Joseph Kabila also in attendance, Heartland, 2-1 winners from the first leg held in the South Eastern Nigerian city of Owerri held their own against their hosts.

Mazembe led in attack by Zambian-import Given Singuluma and the midfield anchored by captain Tresor Mputu Mabi led several raids into the visitors half, but the Heartland rear of captain Victor Ezuruike, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, Orji Kalu and Aziz Ansah remained resolute.

The closest the hosts, who needed at least a lone goal victory to replicate their feats of 1967 and 1968, to breaking the deadlock was in closing stages of the first half but Heartland goalie Augustine Brown stretched his elastic limit to parry away Kaluyituka Dioko’s goal bound diving header from an Mputu cross.

Mazembe resumed the second half with the same momentum but it was injuries to three Heartland players; midfielder King Osanga, defender Ibenegbu and goalie Brown that aided their quest.

Heartland, making their debut on the continental stage appeared unperturbed by the injuries to their influential trio, as they defended gallantly and cleared their lines very well.

Mazembe coach Diego Garzitto replaced Singuluma and Dioko with Lusadisu Basisila and Mvete Luyeye respectively, and the introduction of the duo brought more power into their attacking machinery, yet the opener remained elusive.

The hosts’ dominance in possession were rewarded with series of corner kicks within a spate of minutes, and it was only a matter of time that the deadlock will be broken.

On 73 minutes, during one of such raids led by left-back Somwe Joel, Omodiagbe inadvertently headed the ball past substitute goalie Ikechukwu Ezenwa into his own net for the goal which even attracted the plaudits from President Kabila.

Heartland’s plight was further worsened after veteran Emeka Nwanna was given the marching off orders after a vicious tackle on a Mazembe player, as Les Corbeaux cruised to victory.

Moments after Algerian referee Mohamed Benouza brought proceedings to an end, the Kenya stadium went agog as the players, technical team and fans of Mazembe clad in all-white attire went on a jubilation spree in respond to the glorious feat.

During the presentation ceremony, CAF President Issa Hayatou ushered the trophy to President Kabila who in turn handed it over to Mazembe captain Mputu amidst cheers.

Mazembe will also receive 1,500, 000 US Dollars for their efforts and 1,000,000 for Heartland FC.

My players were tactically indiscipline – Emetole
Heartland FC coach, Kelechi Emetole has attributed his side’s failure to lift the ultimate in the Orange CAF Champions League final to the tactical indiscipline of his players.

The Naze Millionaires lost 0-1 to DR Congo side TP Mazembe in Lubumbabshi on Saturday as the latter cruised to the title on away goals after both legs ended two all.

The Nigerian debutants needed a stalemate to claim their first ever continental title after a 2-1 win from the first leg, but an own goal by Emmanuel Omodiagbe on 73 minutes shattered their aspirations.

A desolated Emetole poured out to cafonline.com after the game that his players’ attitude of no respect for tactics served their bane.

“We lost clearly because of lack of discipline from my players. All my tactical instructions were not implemented and everybody was doing his own thing. This hugely affected our performance.”

The Ex-international nicknamed “Caterpillar” during his playing days also blamed his players’ inability to convert two golden opportunities in the course of the game as another contributing factor.

“We also wasted two golden opportunities in the course of the game and it contributed negatively to our quest.

“Our opponents maintained dominance and exploited every opportunity that came their way.”

Heartland finished the game with 10 men after midfielder Emeka Nwanna was given the marching off orders after a tackle on a Mazembe player in the dying embers of the game.

The Owerri-based club, which will play in next year’s Orange CAF Champions League alongside Bayelsa United as Nigeria’s representatives, received a cash-prize of 1-million US Dollars for emerging runners-up.

The Naze Millionaires, formerly called Iwuanyanwu Nationale also emerged runners-up in 1988 losing to Algeria’s Entente Setif.

Hard work is the secret – Garzitto

TP Mazembe coach Diego Garzitto has cited hard work as the secret behind his team’s capture of the 2009 Orange CAF Champions League title.

Mazembe beat Heartland FC of Nigeria 1-0 in the final second leg clash on Saturday in Lubumbashi to cruise to the title on the away goal rule after both legs ended 2-2.

According the former France International, his team’s success was a result of hard work throughout the season.

“Hard work is the secret to our success. We have preparing feverishly throughout the season and the result has shone. I inculcated the spirit of hard work into my players and it proved crucial.

“Many things have happened in the course of the season. We started the competition in the spirit of hard work and ended on the same note,” the Frenchman of Italian descent told cafonline.com after the match.

The 59-year old, who is enjoying his third stint with the Lubumbashi-based club, also said winning the ultimate was a challenge to his team.

“When we started the season, no one told us our objective was winning the African title. But it was challenge to the playing body and technical team, and I’m very delighted we have succeeded.

“We have put smiles on the faces of the people of Lubumbashi and DR Congo in general, and we are proud of that.”

On the match, Garzitto said his decision to switch tactics in the second half hugely supported their quest after Heartland defended gallantly in the first half.

“In the first half, Heartland adopted close marking and it made things difficult for my players to move around. In the second half, I changed the style and introduced four midfielders to contain the pressure and attack at the same time.

“The change in tactics really supported our game plan and helped us maintain our lead.”

It was the third time Mazembe have emerged winners in the continent’s most prestigious club competition after successes in 1967 and 1968.

In addition to the cash-prize of 1,500,000 US Dollars, Mazembe will also represent Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup slated for the United Arab Emirates in December.

    Mputu coy over Mazembe future

After guiding TP Mazembe to the Orange CAF Champions League title at the expense of Heartland FC of Nigeria, captain Tresor Mputu Mabi remains coy over his future with the Lubumbashi-based club.

Mputu inspired Les Corbeaux to a lone goal victory over Heartland FC of Nigeria in the second leg final on Saturday at the Kenya Stadium in Lubumbashi, as they cruised to the title on away goals after a 2-2 draw from both legs.

The talismanic midfielder who scored seven goals in Mazembe’s run to the title; their first ever in 41-years is on cloud nine after satisfying his major dream with Les Corbeaux.

Since joining the reigning DR Congo champions in 2003, Mputu has emerged a target for most big guns with his scintillating performances, but opted to stay with Les Corbeaux.

“I have not overstayed my tenure at Mazembe. I promised myself that I would have to guide the club to a great feat before I think about leaving.

“Now, after winning the Orange CAF Champions League, I feel fulfilled,” Mputu told cafonline.com after the game.

The midfielder who turns 24 on December 10, and touted as one of the best talents in the history of Congolese football expressed delight at his contribution to the success story of Mazembe.

“I feel happy for myself and my family and I thank all for their efforts in making this feat possible.

Reported to be the most highly-paid player on the continent on a monthly wage in the region of 10,000 US Dollars, Mputu hinted that dust on his future will soon be settled.

“My future depends on my contract. I will meet with Mazembe officials and sort things out.”

Mputu was a member of the DR Congo team that conquered all at the maiden edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) held in Cote d’Ivoire last March and was also adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

“We lost the title at home” – Agba

Heartland FC striker Uche Agba has stated that his side lost out on the Orange CAF Champions League title from the first leg.

The Naze Millionaires’ continental ambitions were undone by an Emmanuel Omodiagbe own goal on 73 minutes as they slumped to lone goal loss that saw TP Mazembe cruised to the ultimate on the away goal rule after 2-2 tie from both legs.

Agba, Heartland’s top scorer in the maiden participation in the club championship with seven goals told cafonline.com that his side’s chances were daunted by slim 2-1 win from the first leg played on a rain-hit pitch at the Dan Ayiam Stadium in Owerri last week.

“Our performance in the first leg didn’t help matters. The rain affected our play and to a large extent our aspirations of lifting the ultimate. We had many chances and failed to make good use of them.”

On Saturday’s game, Agba, knocking at the door of the technical handlers of the Super Eagles with his impressive striking rate in the premier club championship said the odds were against them.

He added that the own goal by Omodiagbe also destabilized them after holding Mazembe gallantly in every department till that period.

“The own-goal we conceded also destabilized our plans. It affected our psyche and our game plan as well.

It was the second time Heartland, formerly called Iwunyanwu Nationale had emerged runners-up in the continental club champions after losing Algerian side Entente Setif in 1988.
