TP Mazembe Need To Score Just Once At Home

It is difficult to know quite who holds the upper hand going into the second leg of the 2009 African Champions League final between TP Mazembe and Heartland in Lubumbashi on Saturday.
Nigerian side Heartland completed a 2-1 win in Owerri on Sunday, so they hold the lead on the scoreboard, but that away goal for Mazembe has left them needing to score just once at home to win the tie.
The Nigerians will take heart from the fact that Sudanese side Al Hilal kept Mazembe scoreless at home in the second leg of the semifinal, but it was a rarity this season and the DR Congo team have been at their free-scoring best in front of their home fans.
Their coach, Diego Garzitto, believes home support may be enough to carry his side through to a first win in the competition since claiming back-to-back titles in 1968 and 1969.
“I am very disappointed with the scoreline [in the first leg],” he says. “We have all to play for now in the return leg and with the fans behind us; we should be able to win at home.”
His counterpart at Heartland, Kelechi Emetole, says his side can win away, but knows that a draw would be enough to claim their first-ever continental title.
“I hope to go to Lubumbashi to defend the 2-1 lead that my team has taken here at home. I believe it’s possible to win on away soil,” he says. And there is more than just national pride at stake. Prize-money of US$1.5-million will be handed to the winners, as well as a place at the FIFA Club World Cup that will be played in the UAE in December. For the loser, the consolation prize in US$1-million.

Mazembe set to end long wait for African title

Democratic Republic of Congo club Tout Puissant Mazembe are set to become African champions Saturday 41 years after last conquering the continent. None of the team seeking to overcome a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Nigerian visitors Heartland in Lubumbashi were born when the Congolese 'Crows' beat Togolese team Etoile Filante 6-4 on aggregate to retain the trophy.
Then known as TP Englebert, the club formed 70 years ago by Benedictine monks became the first to successfully defend the African title and the record was not equalled until 2004 when Enyimba of Nigeria repeated the feat.

Mazembe have been regular African campaigners since, but the closest they came to completing a title hat-trick was in 2002 when falling to eventual winners Zamalek of Egypt in the semi-finals.

French coach Diego Garzitto, hired this year as part of a five-million-dollar plan to rule Africa, believes home support can lead his side to glory at the 35,000-seat Kenya Stadium in the southern mining city.

"We have everything to play for in the return match and with our supporters behind us we should be able to triumph at home," he said, eyeing a record 1.5-million-dollar first prize.

Mazembe also have the psychological advantage of having already beaten Heartland 2-0 at home in the group phase of the competition via second-half goals from midfielders Mabi Mputu and Dioko Kaluyituka.

Mputu, leading scorer in both the Orange CAF Champions League and the second-tier Orange CAF Confederation Cup two years ago, has struck seven goals, including the opening goal of the first leg in Nigeria last weekend.

Less known internationally, Kaluyituka is the leading 2009 Orange Champions League scorer with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the 5-0 rout of Zimbabwe visitors Monomotapa.

That victory was among five in a row at home before the Congolese came unstuck in the semi-finals, losing 2-0 to Sudanese side Al-Hilal. However, Mazembe went through having won the first leg 5-2 in Omdurman.

Heartland from the south-east city of Owerri are hoping to avoid a repeat of 1988 final when the club was known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale and they slumped 4-0 away to Algerian opponents Entente Setif.

Despite a Mazembe record of only three home losses in 47 African matches, Nigerian coach Kelechi Emetole believes the 'Naze Millionaires' can emulate Asante Kotoko of Ghana, Petro Atletico of Angola and Hilal.

"The first leg was particularly difficult being a final, but a win is a win and I believe we can defend our advantage and possibly succeed in Lubumbashi," he told Nigerian reporters.

King Osanga, scorer of the Heartland equaliser last weekend, is equally upbeat: "No matter what anyone says we hold the advantage at the moment and I hope to score again in the return leg."

The best bet for Heartland goals is first-leg matchwinner Uche Agba, a 23-year-old striker who has struck seven in Africa this season, including four from the last three outings.

An added incentive for the clubs is a place in the end-of-year FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and a possible match-up with European champions Barcelona.

Lubumbashi; capital of African Football

For the first time in history, Lubumbashi, the capital of Katanga, situated in the far South of the Republique of Congo, will host the final of the Champions League, the most elevated competition of the Confederation of African Football.

Tout Puissant Mazembe, a club founded in 1939, will in the return leg match receive the Nigerian team, Health Land Football Club (which won the first leg at home) at the Kenia Municipal Stadium that is already prepared for the jamboree.

“It will be a royal final,” Jibril Aruna, one of the celebrated Swahili desk reporters of the Congolese National Radio Television (RTNC), broadcasting from Lubumbashi, remarked.

Following their qualification for the final of the 13th edition of the Champions League, the Crows, as T.P. Mazembe is fondly called, which usually don the black and white colours, has been vibrating to the rhythm of football.

The attention paid to the final, which will be played on Saturday, November 7, is proof of the enormous power the round ball wields.

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, who arrived in Lubumbashi Thursday, November 5, 2009, expressed hope that fair play becomes the main issue at the final.

“Since football is such a force of attraction, explains the CAF President, it is for this reason that it is widespread in the world“No other sport is so universal. And this, in effect, has to break down barriers because it is a way of meeting and engaging in dialogue.

Links are established among people. Football is a kind of language of love, a language to fraternize.”

T.P. Mazembe: 1967, 1968 and 1980

Tout Puissant Mazembe “black and white”, winner of the African Champions League Cup in 1967 and 1968, and finalist of the same competition in 1970 and 1971, also won the African Cup Winners Cup in 1980. T.P. Mazembe has already climbed to the pinnacle of the Confederation of African Football, CAF. No other Congolese club can boast of such titles to its credit.

The first African champions which bore the colours of T.P. Mazembe had such names as Pierre Kalala, Robert Kazadi, Leonard Saidi, Raymond Bwanga, Martin Tshinabu, Pierre Katumba, Albert Mukombo, Célestin Kamba, Félicien Kabenji, André Kalonzo, Benoît Nyembo and Jean Ngoie. These athletes, disciplined and trimmed to size, toured the continent within four years at a stretch. From Brazzaville to Cairo, passing through Addis-Ababa, Kumasi, Abidjan, Yaounde, Lome and Conakry, they aroused crowds.

Being the author of historical goals, Martin Tshinabu was a spectacular winger of exceptional class. A great dribbler and free kick shooter, he was dazzling against Forces Armees Royales (FAR) of Morocco during T.P. Mazembe’s second African conquest. Hailed by the Casablanca public during a match which the Congolese side dominated from start to finish, Tshinabu only joint his team mates in the dressing room naked. Excited by the start and the blinding shots of this celebrated left winger, spectators, like vultures, threw themselves on him to have either a piece of his short or his jersey to keep as souvenir from the football king.

In a match against Ashanti Kotoko on January 24, 1971, at the 20^th May Stadium in Kinshasa, Tshinabu failed to score a penalty that would have permitted Mazembe to win the trophy title definitively. Congolese fans, fallen from so high, wept alongside their players. In the Ghanaian side, there was a spider: Robert Mensah, an agile keeper who was reputed in air born duels.

It took T.P. Mazembe a decade to rebuild with success. Under the captainship of Pierre Kalala, the legendary captain who became coach, Mazembe defeated Africa Sport at the final of the African Cup Winners Cup. This victory renewed hopes in spectators but the joy would be short lived. In the eyes of critical observers, things were clear: the injection of new blood negatively affected the team. The departure of Kazadi, Bwanga (African footballer of the year 1974) and others like Mwepu plunged the team into an abyss. This was followed by a series of poor results. The public heavily criticised the team management.
