Super Eagles Through To Quarterfinals
Two goals and a Man of the Match performance from Peter Odemwingie was what led Nigeria to a 3-0 win over Mozambique in their last Group C match of the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Lubango on Wednesday night.
The win secured the Super Eagles’ place in the quarterfinals of the competition. Both teams looked focussed from the first whistle.
Both knew what lay on the line and what was possibly at stake. For Nigeria all they required was single point to ensure qualification into the next round.
For Mozambique, on the other hand, only three points would suffice. The game started slowly with the Mambas passing the ball around nicely, trying to build from the back. But uncharacteristically a miss-placed pass by Dario Khan gifted the Super Eagles their first chance of the match in the ninth minute.
The defensive lapse by Khan saw him pass the ball to Nigeria’s Chinedu Obasi who proceeded to drive into the box and unleash a pile-driver of a shot.
Kampango, however, was on hand for Mozambique diving full stretch to his left to deny Obasi the opening goal.
