Former champions Asante Kotoko tumble in opener


Two-time African champions, Ghana ’s Asante Kotoko failed to redeem their image once again on the continental scene after Senegalese championships ASC Linguere handed them 0-2 loss in the Orange CAF Champions League clash on Saturday.

The result was one of the upsets as the first leg matches of the preliminary round of the premier club championship got underway this weekend.

Former African champions, Ismaili of Egypt, Algeria ’s J.S. Kabylie and Esperance of Tunisia however gave a good account of themselves by returning unscathed in their respective encounters away from home.

Kotoko held their own against the Senegalese champions in their clash at the northwestern city of St. Louis before two late goals in the closing stages of the game handed the hosts victory.

Elsewhere at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi , 1969 African champions Ismaili proved that experience matter at this stage as they held Kenyan champions, Sofapaka to a barren draw. The Kenyans, debuting on the continental scene failed to break through the Ismaili defence, with goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi, who stood in for Egypt national goalie Essam Al-Hadari proving their saviour with spectacular saves to deny the hosts.

J.S. Kabylie beat Gambian champions Armed Forces 2-1 whilst Esperance came from two goals down to hold Sierra Leonean champions East End Lions to a 2-2 draw.

In Gaborone , the goal scoring headache of Orlando Pirates reared its ugly head once again as the Buccaneers settled for a goalless draw with Botswana champions, Gaborone United in a fiercely contested clash at the University of Botswana Stadium , whiles Difaa El Jadida of Morocco held OS Balantas of Guinea Bissau to a similar scoreline in Bissau .

Tanzanian champions, Young Africans were humbled in their opening clash after a 2-3 loss to FC Eloi Lupopo of DR Congo in front of their teeming fans in Dar Es Salaam . Zimbabwean midfielder Carrington Gomba shot the visitors into the lead on five minutes, before compatriot Philip Marufu doubled the lead seven minutes from half time.

Yanga, who have set sights on a place at the group phase on their sixth appearance in the prestigious club competition, reduced the defict through Kigi Makasi and Mrisho Ngasa equalized on 69 minutes, before a defensive blunder gifted the Congolese the winner five minutes from time.

Angolan side, Recreativo de Libolo showed the results of an intensive training camp in Turkey in preparation for the competition with a 2-2 draw against Rwanda champions APR in Kigali . The Angolans, with five Brazilians in their set up matched their hosts squarely in all departments to earn the vital draw.

The remaining fixtures of the first leg prelims will be cleared on Sunday, whilst the second leg matches is scheduled for a fortnight.

Orlando Pirates held in Botswana




Orlando Pirates will have it all to do in the second leg of their CAF Champions League Preliminary Round qualifier after being held to a goalless draw by Gaborone United on Saturday afternoon.
Bucs were lucky to escape with a draw on a hot day in the Botswana capital, with Mandla Mgadla missing three great chances for a famous win for his side.

Dennis Masina and Gert Schalkwyk wasted chances early on, while goalkeeper Kgosietsile Senjoba did well to save at Phenyo Mongalo’s feet on 18 minutes.

United almost took a shock lead just before the half-hour mark, but Mgadla headed wide with Senzo Meyiwa well beaten.

Mgadla missed another great chance just after the break after Pirates failed to clear their lines, and then again on 69 minutes when Meyiwa was found in no-man’s land.

With Teko Modise watching the game from the stands, the visitors lacked creativity and this frustrated the strikers Mthembu and Schalkwyk, who seemed isolated.
