TP Mazembe – Stade Malien : who will win the Supercup


Tout Puissant Mazembe, winner of the Orange African Champions League will face Stade Malien, on Sunday in Lubumbashi in the 18^th edition of the Orange Super Cup.Created in 1992, the African Super Cup is competed for by the winner of the Champions League and the winner the Confederations Cup (or in the past the Cup Winners Cup). During the first four editions of the competition, CAF usually decides the venue of the Super Cup but that has since changed as the African Champion now has the honour to host the game, except in 2006 during the 50^th year of its existence that CAF decided to play the encounter in Addis-Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and one of the co- founders of the Confederation.
Only on two occasions when Africa Sports of Abidjan in 1992 and Etoile Sahel of Sousse (1997) won the competition that the Champions league winner missed out on the honours. The tradition has often been for the African champion to win the trophy. Sometimes it comes with difficulties, such as in 1998 when ASEC won the cup after prolongation. Enyimba in 2004, Zamalek in 1996 and Al Ahly in 2005 and 2006 went through similar circumstances. It was also during post match penalties that Africa Sports and Etoile Sahel of Sousse emerged winners.
Whoever is the winner of the 18th edition TP Mazembe or Stade Malien, it will come to add to the rich record of teams which have lifted the title.

Stade Malien storm Lumbumbashi with a mission

Orange CAF Confederation Cup holders, Stade Malien are hoping for their second continental silverware in less than two months as they face T.P Mazembe of DR Congo in the Orange CAF Super Cup on Sunday in Lubumbashi.

Les Blancs left Bamako last Tuesday for the South Eastern Congolese city with high hopes of returning with the ultimate against Mazembe in the one-off match.

Head coach Djibril Drame and his charges have sets sights on another historic triumph of being the first West African club since Enyimba FC of Nigeria in 2005 to lift ultimate that pits the winner of the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup.

The Bamako-based side has been preparing feverishly for the clash on the quiet and wrapped up their low profile preparations before emplaning for Lubumbashi via Ethiopia.

The 14-time Malian champions’ readiness for the clash confirms with their performance in the local championships where they are perched at the summit of the standings on 21 points, a point richer than old rivals Djoliba, and with a game in hand.

Ahead of the match, the entire Mali are rooting behind the Bamako-based club as they seek to upset T.P. Mazembe to the Orange CAF Super Cup title.

The Malian Government has designated Youth and Sports Minister, Hamane Niang to lead the team to Lubumbashi, Mali Football Federation Second Vice President; Mady Kamissoko Boubou also billed to join.

The team is expected to arrive in Lubumbashi on Friday, February 19, 48-hours ahead of the clash.

Egyptian giants, Al-Ahly have won the annual one-off match the highest number of occasions, four times in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Mazembe ends Zimbabwe tour on high note


African Champions, T.P. Mazembe of DR Congo have returned to their Lubumbashi base after a 10-day training camp in Harare, Zimbabwe.

A 36-member delegation made of 29 players and seven officials left for a training camp in Zimbabwe on February 7 as part of preparations for the Orange CAF Super Cup and the Congolese League.

Whilst in Harare, Mazembe also took part in the African Safari Tournament which had Zimbabwean clubs CAPS United, Gunners FC and Lengthens as other participants, to fine-tune their preparations for the clash with Orange CAF Confederation Cup holders, Stade Malien of Mali.

The Harare trip, under the invitation of the Zimbabwe Football Association was the second time Les Corbeaux had pitched camped in the Southern African country ahead of a major championship.

The Congolese champions moved base to Harare before Orange CAF Champions League final clash with Nigeria’s Heartland FC, whom they beat on the away goal rule after a 2-2 tie from both legs to claim their third African title after 1967 and 1968.

Mazembe, who unveiled a 10 million dollar budget for the coming season have also roped in Italian Stephano Maccopi, formerly of Swiss side La Chaux-de-Fonds to deputize for trainer Diego Garzitto.

Upon their return to Lubumbashi last Wednesday, February 17; Garzito declared that his side is well prepared for the Stade Malien task.

"We are already to face Stade Malien as we finalized our plans in Harare. We have just signed four players from Zambia and another four from Zimbabwe into the squad.

“It's good news for us because (they) will strengthen our defence, which has been weak for many years.”

Mazembe will face Stade Malien on Sunday, February 21 at the Stade Omnisports de la Kenya in Lubumbashi.

Kidiaba boost for Mazembe ahead of Orange CAF Super Cup

DR Congolese champions T.P. Mazembe have been boosted by the availability of goalkeeper Robert Muteba Kidiaba ahead of the Orange CAF Super Cup with Stade Malien of Mali .

The Orange CAF Champions League holders will host the Bamako-based club on Sunday at the Stade Omnisport de la Kenya in the contest that officially wraps up the continental club calendar for the year 2009.

Kidiaba will make his first official return for Les Corbeaux in the continental clash after serving a two-match suspension after being sent off in the FIFA Club World Cup clash 5^th place game against Auckland FC of New Zealand last year.

The 34-year old shot-stopper famed for his bottom-dragging celebration anytime Mazembe scores, sat out of the league clash against Olympique Club Lubumbashi City last Thursday to serve his ban.

His return is widely regarded as a major boost for Les Corbeaux considering his rich vein of experience.

Kidiaba, who celebrated his 34^th birthday on February 1, joined Mazembe in 2002 and has played an influential role in the club’s successes in their domestic and continental campaigns.

The veteran goalie was in the post during last year’s Orange CAF Champions League where Mazembe edged past Heartland FC of Nigeria on the away goal after a 2-2 from both legs in the final.

In a related development, Mazembe wrapped up their preparations for the Orange CAF Super Clash with a 4-0 routing of Olympique Club Lubumbashi City in a league clash last Thursday.

A brace each from Zambian-import Given Singuluma and Pathou Kabangu , top scorer in the DR Congo league last season was to confirm their readiness for the clash with Les Blancs .

The duo, scored in each half as the Orange CAF Champions League holders added the Orange CAF Super Cup to their trophy cabinet and to confirm their status as the best club currently on the continent.

Playing in front of a packed crowd at the Stade Omnisport de la Kenya in Lubumbashi, the DR Congo champions could not afford to slip and they lived up to the billing of pre-favourites with the talking on the pitch.

With both sides parading new faces in their set up, it was Mazembe, whose new recruits proved their worth with a performance that gave no clue to their debutant status.

On the quarter hour mark, Stopila, one of the new recruits in the Mazembe squad soared above his markers to head home the opener from a corner-kick. Mazembe goalie, Muteba Kidiaba, who was rarely tested on the day, responded to the opener with his famous bottom-dragging celebration amidst chants from the fans.

The goal set the stadium alive but Stade Malien, who fielded an entirely new squad from the squad that lifted the Orange Confederation Cup gave a good account of themselves with some occasional flashes of brilliance.

As the Mazembe fans roared for more goals, the Malians took charge of the game with dominance in midfield but were never dangerous in front of goal.

The second half resumed on the same tempo, with both teams battling for dominance on the rain-soaked pitch of the Stade Omnisport de la Kenya, located in the copper rich city of Lubumbashi.

Talismanic Mazembe captain Tresor Mputu appeared ordinary and this rendered their attack redundant compelling Head Coach Diego Garzito to bring on Singuluma in the last half hour.

Singuluma, top scorer at the maiden African Nations Championship (CHAN) proved his worth by heading home from a corner kick ten minutes from time and to seal victory for Les Corbeaux.

With defeat staring at them, the Stade Malien players reorganised themselves but their efforts was not enough to even earn them a consolation, as they sat dejected on the field after proceedings was brought to an end.

By the victory, Mazembe becomes the first Congolese club to lift the Super Cup trophy since its inception in 1993.

Mputu ready for new challenges

T.P. Mazembe captain Tresor Mputu Mabi says he is envisaging fresh challenges after winning almost everything in continental club football with the DR Congo champions.
The 24-year old led Les Corbeaux to their second major continental title in less than three months courtesy a 2-0 victory over Orange CAF Confederation Cup holders Stade Malien on Sunday at the Stade Omnisport de la Kenya.
Prior to that, he had guided Maxembe to the Orange CAF Champions League title, their first ever in 41 years as well as the DR Congo League title last year.
Mputu, who has been linked with several clubs abroad finally, confirmed that his days with the Lubumbashi-based club may be over soon.
“In the next five or six months, I will be leaving T.P. Mazembe for a different place.”
The talented midfielder however remained coy on his destination, despite reports linking him strongly with a move to Scottish giants, Glasgow Rangers.
Nevertheless, he was very grateful to the Management, Technical team and official for the support shown him during his stay with the club he joined in 2002.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to be part of this team. I thank the fans for the support they have shown towards me and the rest of my mates during my stay.”
Meanwhile, a section of the Mazembe followers are the least happy with news of the impending departure of their prized asset, Mputu.

Tete Bokasa, who was still reveling in the Orange Super Cup triumph, has urged Management to do everything humanly possible to extend the stay of the talented midfielder.
“Today’s victory has proved to all that Mazembe is the best club in Africa. But I’m not happy with Mputu departure, he is a great player and we need him.”
“This victory is for Diego Garzitto and his team. They have done tremendously well coopled with support from Moise Katumbi (President of the Club). This victory has united the whole country and has really showcased that entire country is behind Mazembe,” added another fan, who studies Theatre Arts in the local Institute.

Garzitto, who guided his team to their second continental title in less than three months after the Orange CAF Champions League trophy last year was full of praise for his players for their performance.
“We had a good game. We increased our efforts in the course of the game and we succeeded in achieving our target. The most important thing is victory and had it.”

The 61-year old trainer however cautioned his players against partying long with thoughts of being the best club on the continent having annexed all the major championship titles.
“This is the time for celebration, but we are not dreaming that we are the most successful club around. We have to improve on some areas of our team to be considered most successful.”
On the Stade Malien team, the Italian-born Frenchman lauded their performance against his much experienced side.
“They are a very tactical side and I’m really impressed by their cohesive play. They need about two or three players, and they will be a great side.”
Garzitto also added that captain Tresor Mputu Mabi has all the qualities of becoming a great player amidst remarkable successes on the domestic and continental scene.
“He has all the qualities of a great player and has had a successful career. I’m very optimistic that he would be a great player but he needs a certain level (environment) to prove that.”
The Frenchman masterminded Mazembe’s triumph in the Orange CAF Champions League and DR Congo league last year.
